Lowriders, Comics, and Good Vibes: The Ultimate Surprise Launch at N. Main Salinas Foster’s Freeze

When you think about a typical indie comic book launch, you probably imagine a quiet bookstore or a small event with a few fans browsing the shelves. But for Gabriel Cortes, an indie comic book author/creator whose heart beats for the Lord and his Chicano culture and community, TJ, his loving wife, wasnt’t about to do anything basic. She wanted to throw him a launch that matched the flavor of his comic—bold, exciting, and full of familia and carnalismo. So fam, she decided to throw a surprise comic book launch at Foster’s Freeze, with a lowrider car show, fans, and the kind of support only the community of Salinas knows how to give. And let me tell you, it was a celebration that was nothing short of epic.

The Surprise: A Comic Launch with a Twist

On the afternoon of February 22, 2025, Gabe thought he was rolling up to get a bite to eat as TJ had lead him to believe. Oblivious and completely in the dark (literally) as a result of the blind fold she had him wear on the way to the spot. Little did he know, that TJ and the family of fans had something much bigger planned. Instead of a quiet, low-key release that she originally planned, TJ wanted to make it an event that honored his hard work and celebrated his roots, after all it had been a rough few years for him the comic itself took over 30+ just to get this point so it was about time. That’s why she teamed up with Carlos at Copymat, Jesse ‘Candy’ and City Councilman Andrew Sandoval to throw a surprise launch at Foster’s Freeze (thank you Gina) for a real birthday celebration that would also be the birthplace of the comic, so since Fosters was a classic spot that holds a special place in many hearts going way back, especially within the Salinas community.

The real kicker? She wanted to make sure the launch wasn’t just about comics—it was a celebration of Salinas lowrider culture, creativity, and familia. So, they completely packed the place with custom lowriders, car enthusiasts, and fans who were more than ready to support Gabe and his comic, "VATOMAN ...and RUBEN!!".

Setting the Scene: Lowriders, Comics, and Culture

As soon as you pulled up to Foster’s Freeze, the parking lot was transformed into a lowrider showstopper. Classic cars were shining under the sun, their hydraulic systems ready to go and their paint jobs gleaming like they were straight out of a eastside mural. The whole scene was like stepping into a living, breathing tribute to our chicano pride, with cars serving as a canvas for the art and culture that runs deep in our Salinas community.

And while the cars were turning heads, it was clear that the real attraction was the people. Fans of Gabriel's work, comic book lovers, car enthusiasts, and even families gathered, ready to show their love and support. it was about celebrating a story that reflected the struggle, the hustle, and the beauty of our combined experiences.

The Big Moment: VATOMAN ...and RUBEN!! Unveiled

When Gabe showed up at the event, first thing he noticed was Danny, (the homie from Sun Street) popping a large plastic champagne bottle firework (..safe and sane, don't trip SPD) and a hug saying, 'This is all for you, congrats!' as he hugged Danny, Gabe then looked on in shock and awe, he was hit with a wave of cheers and applause. It was completely off the hook! He had walked right into the middle of his surprise launch and was greeted by fans who were ready to buy his new comic book, "VATOMAN ...and RUBEN!!", and support him from the heart. As soon as the first copies were revealed, the excitement was contagious. Fans grabbed their books, most of them even getting their copies signed right on the spot. It wasn’t just a comic book signing; it was a celebration of culture and the art of storytelling.

Gabe didn’t just stand behind a table signing books—he was in the mix, connecting with his fans, talking about the comic, sharing stories, and explaining how his roots influenced every page. Fans were loving it—because it wasn’t just about reading a comic. It was about understanding the culture, and the community that brought it all together.

Fans Showing Up Strong: All About Support

One of the most beautiful things about this event was how supportive the crowd was. People didn’t just buy a comic book—they bought into Gabe’s vision. Fans were lining up to grab VATOMAN ...and RUBEN!!, and the love didn’t stop there. Everyone was picking up keychains, stickers, and other cool merch to take home. And as if that wasn’t enough, the energy was off the charts. Everyone was hyped about supporting an indie author who poured his heart into creating something that reflected who we are, where we come from, and where we’re going.

It was clear: this wasn’t just a comic book launch—it was an event that brought out the best of our beautiful community. People came out not only because they loved the art, but because they understood the heart behind it. Shout out to 'Candy' who was on scene as the videographer/photographer taking beautiful imagery that would capture forever the essence and memorable moments of that day.

Car Show Vibes: Lowriders and Community Pride

While the comic book release was in full swing, the lowrider car show was just as hype. The cars weren’t just vehicles—they were art on wheels, showcasing custom designs, shiny chrome, and the kind of craftsmanship that only comes from years of passion and pride in our culture. The lowriders were firme, the music lightly playing, and families were strolling through the cars, admiring the detail and feeling that deep connection to something they hold close to their hearts.

Gabe himself took some time to walk around the show, chatting with fans about the lowrider scene, the cars, and how the culture influenced not just the comic, but his life. It was a perfect mix of both worlds—the art of the cars and the art of storytelling. Everyone was talking about their experiences, sharing stories, and bonding over the things that made them proud of their culture.

The Afterparty: Good Vibes, Great Memories

As we came to a close and the last few books were put away, the event wound down with the kind of energy that only a celebration like this could bring. People stuck around, hanging out, chatting, and reflecting on what they had just experienced. For Gabe, the day wasn’t just about the comic—it was about connecting with his community and giving them a piece of the love and pride that had fueled his work for so long. It wasn’t just a book launch; it was a moment of unity, of people coming together to support something that was bigger than just one person.

As for the fans, they didn’t just leave with a signed comic—they left with a sense of belonging. This was their culture, their stories, their people. And they showed up for it, loud and proud.

Looking Forward: More Surprises and More Support

After this event, it’s clear that VATOMAN ...and RUBEN!! is more than just a comic book—it’s the beginning of something truly special. Gabe already has plans for future projects, and the community is here for it. The support for indie creators is strong, and the love for our community and cultura is alive and thriving. Who knows what’s next? Maybe the next comic book launch will be even bigger, with more lowriders, more fans, and more culture to celebrate.

But serio, one thing is for sure: the love and support that was shown at this surprise launch proved that when our community comes together, straight magic happens. Stay tuned family, because this is just the beginning.
