Comics y Cultura: A Local Comic Book Launch with Traditional Folkloric Ballet

March 1, 2025, This past weekend, Salinas came alive with creativity and culture, bringing together indie comic book lovers and youth ballet folklorico dance performers for a day that was truly magical. From the launch of a new comic book to our local talented youth, the event was a powerful reminder of what happens when our community unites to celebrate what makes us unique. The day was full of color, energy, and connection, and everyone walked away feeling warm and a little more inspired even on a windy winters day.

A Throwback Comic Book Launch with a Chicano Touch

The excitement kicked-off with the launch of "VATOMAN ...and RUBEN!!", a new indie comic book series by our very own local author creator, Gabriel Cortes. Gabe’s book had been the talk of the town for a few weeks, and fans of all ages were pumped to finally get their hands on a signed copy and the fresh new swag. The event took place on the North end of town at the ‘Sylvan Learning Center’ @sylvanlearningsalinasmonterey that was graciously hosted by owner/teacher ‘Cary Swensen’ and Salinas City Councilman, ‘Andrew Sandoval’ @andrewsandoval_councilmember, but in all honesty it felt more like a family gathering than a typical book launch.

Gabe then shared a few words on the mic raffling off a few of the recently published books. While speaking at times individually the heart and soul of the book and how it was about the Lords hand of grace and mercy, divine inspiration for any of its success of this book was Gabes journey as an artist/writer growing up in Salinas and Monterey County had a major influence on the development his newly beloved characters. The fictional story although filled with laughter also reflected the essence of our community, and you could feel the connection between the author and the readers. The book appeared to be an instant hit, with folks eager to dive into the pages and share their excitement. Special thanks to DJ ‘Joaquin Jesus’ from ‘San Andres Entertainment’ for MC'ing and the event and Carlos and his team at @CopyMat1 on the book printing, they came out fantastic!

This wasn’t just about the comic book—it was about bonding over shared experiences, and the love of storytelling that brings us all a little closer together.

Honoring the Art of Ballet Folkloric Dance

As the event filled with anticipation as attendees eagerly awaited their signed copy of the book. However, it was the surprise performances by folkloric dance group ‘gf.Xinachtli’ that truly stole the spotlight. These performances were not just an addition to the event; they were an integral part of the days experience, weaving a narrative of tradition, heritage, and joy.

The folkloric dance performances stole the show, with the group showcasing beautiful traditional dances of rhythmic Latin American styles, and more. These dancers told stories through movement, honoring their heritage and connecting the audience to a rich cultural history.

The comic book being launched was inspired by diverse cultural tales, making the dances a perfect complement to the day. As the dancers performed, the atmosphere shifted, and the audience was captivated by the colorful and emotional depth conveyed through every step. It was a reminder of the magic of live performance and the power of the arts to preserve tradition and tell our stories.

A Day to Celebrate Our Cultura

The event ended with a standing ovation for the dancers, who added a layer of meaning to the Comic book launch, celebrating both written and performed art. It was clear that this event was more than just a series of activities—it was a celebration of who we are as a community. The comic book launch, and the youth dance performers each highlighted different aspects of our culture, but they all shared a common thread: a love for creativity, passion, and community. It was a beautiful reminder that when we come together to support one another and honor our talents, we create something special. This day wasn’t just about books, or dance—it was about the spirit of our cultura and how it drives us to connect, create, and keep growing together.

It was truly an unforgettable day, Thank the good Lord that everything went well, highlighting how different forms of expression can come together to create something infinitely special. Here’s to many more days like this—full of creativity, connection, and comunidad.
